Setting up a skewer (2)
In the previous lessons, two opposing pieces of the defending side were already on the same line (file, rank or diagonal). In the next three lessons, you will learn that by playing forcing moves, you can also get pieces that are not yet on the same line to be on the same line one move later. Then a skewer wins material.
In this lesson we focus on checks.
What do you have to do?
Give check and to force the king in an unfavorable spot. Subsequently win material with a skewer.
The black queen on a1 is unprotected. It would be nice to get the black king on the same diagonal as the queen (a1-h8), because then there are possibilities for an skewer! White can give check in several ways, but the only way to get the queen and king on the same diagonal is with 1.Qd8+! After 1...Ke5 the king and queen are placed on the same diagonal. Also goal 2 (executing a skewer) is now within reach: 2.Qh8+! Kd6 3.Qxa1. White has won a queen!
